How to help your clients strengthen their nails

While you'll always take good care of your client's nails during their appointment with you, that may not be the case when they're away from the salon.

Keeping your client's nails healthy and strong is a joint effort between both you and them, so we've put together our favourite tips and reminders to help give your client a nudge in the right direction.

Recommend a good cuticle oil

Cuticle oil will always be our number one for strong, healthy nails and we're sure it's something you apply to each client's nails once their gel manicure is complete. But do they have their own cuticle oil to use between appointments? Advise your client to use this daily if they have particularly weak or dry nails. Remind them not to go overboard - just a few drops to each cuticle will be enough.

Advise them to stay hydrated

While applying cuticle oil will be beneficial, hydration for the rest of the body is just as important. Drinking enough water is essential for overall health and helps the body retain moisture from your head to your toes – and your nails too! If your client is struggling with weak nails, recommend they try aiming for 1-2 litres of water per day to keep fully hydrated, especially in the summer months when the weather is warmer.

Don’t over-file the nails

Over-filling your nails is one of the main causes of nail breakages. When filing your client's nails, make sure you file in one direction with your Bluesky Nail File; start on one side of your nail and use careful strokes, before doing the same number of strokes on the other side to keep them as even as possible.

Make sure they're not picking at their gel polish!

As we all know, improper removal of gel polish can be a recipe for disaster. Remind your clients that the best way to remove their gel manicure is by going to see you. If they do need to remove their gel from home, make sure they know the process. Remind them to use foils and cotton pads with an acetone remover and not to keep it on for longer than 10-15 minutes.

Don't let them use their nails as tools

Remind your clients that the perfect gel manicure you just did for them will only stay that way with proper care! Ensure they know to use rubber gloves when cleaning or washing up to protect their nails from chemicals and from warm water; both of which can weaken the nail. It's also worth reminding them that long soaks in the bath can also weaken their nails due to over moisturisation, so they may want to opt for a shower if they have a fresh manicure!

A few simple reminders will hopefully mean your clients care for their nails in between appointments. But if they're still struggling with weak nails, our functional nail products can help you create a strong foundation for their gel manicure.
